Straw can be made from a variety of grain crops, and regardless of where it comes from, its purposes are generally the same. Straw can be used as a part of the roughage component in the diet of cattle and horses. Straw has got a low nutrient and energy content (in comparison to hay). When consumed by stock, the heat generated when the microorganisms in a herbivore’s gut digest the straw helps maintain the stocks body temperature in cold climates. This straw is also used to feed to cattle on crops.
Straw is also often used as bedding for large and small animals, as well as insulation for protecting crops that grow through the winter. The average weight of our large straw bales is between 300-500kg.
